Letting Go of Postpartum Advice to Find What Works for You

Becoming a mother is transformative - and overwhelming. Unsolicited advice from everyone can make you feel even more uncertain. The truth is, not all postpartum advice works for every new mom.

Maybe it's time to let go of generic postpartum advice. The best way to thrive in motherhood? Learn how to focus on what works for YOU. That's the best way to thrive in motherhood.

Let’s explore why one-size-fits-all advice just doesn’t cut it in the world of motherhood. Be sure to tune into Episode 2 of the Postpartum Prep Podcast to dive in deeper.

The Problem with Generic Postpartum Advice

We’ve all been there. A well-meaning friend or relative (or stranger in the grocery store) offers unsolicited advice. The kind of generic, opinionated list of "should's" that makes you actually want less of their advice.

That’s the problem with generic advice: it doesn’t consider your unique needs. At best, you just ignore it. At worst, it can lead to self-doubt and unnecessary stress. When advice doesn’t fit your situation, it can leave you feeling like you’re doing something wrong.

Why One-Size-Fits-All Doesn’t Work in Motherhood

Every mom’s journey is different. Your experience won’t look like anyone else’s - and that’s perfectly okay! For example:

  • Breastfeeding might come easily - or it could be a challenge.

  • Your baby might be calm - or a little more sensitive.

  • Your recovery from childbirth could be quick - or it might take time.

All of our experiences are so different. The reality is: what works for one mom may not work for you. That’s where the problem with advice comes in.

The Person-Centered Approach to Postpartum Support

As a postpartum doula, I don’t give you a list of “shoulds.” I help you uncover what works for YOU.

  • It’s about listening deeply to your needs.

  • It’s about encouraging you to find what fits your values and lifestyle.

Instead of imposing advice, my goal is to support your unique journey. I’m here to help you feel empowered, not to tell you how to be a mom.

You are the expert on your baby, your body, and your life.

Why This Matters

I believe that when postpartum support is rooted in empathy and non-judgment, it leads to growth. You begin to trust yourself more deeply and feel confident in your choices. Empowerment comes from tuning into your own instincts, not from following generic advice.

“Motherhood isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every mother, every baby, every family is unique. What works beautifully for one mom might not work at all for another. And that’s okay!”
